Helping the heart

The moving crew picked up my belongings yesterday. The leader of the crew—scruffy white beard and paper work on metal clipboard—was immersed in listing everything I was sending away…from my cutting board to my couch.

I felt like I was being judged. The silence was the worst. I was interpreting the man’s every breath, step and gaze. He was mumbling as well…and of course my imagination went wild. ‘Did he just say girls and their shit ?…Nope…leave him alone…let him do his job’

But then he said: ‘Research huh?’

*Shocked*

I did not recall telling anyone from the company that I was moving for research purposes…(among others)

‘What kind of research? Science or engineer?’

‘Design’ I shared, with a smile as I looked forward to his response.

And there it was…the typical and predictable chuckle accompanied by the ‘oh well that’s not going to save the heart…’ comment.

‘It can,’ I said as I tried to control the tone of my voice…(after all the guy has my life in his truck and I did not want to be impolite…) ‘I can work with doctors and help design tools for surgery…I can design medical interfaces for patients to access information about types and stags of cancer,’ I proudly said

He paused his writing, looked up and said ‘I guess you can…’
